Tuesday, January 30, 2007 Welcome Wilson, N.C., readers! It's super cool to be appearing this week and next in the Wilson Daily Times in Wilson, N.C.! Baldo is part of a comic strip "tryout" (read about it here). We hope all you Wilson readers enjoy the strip! Please go to wilsondaily.com, click on the "comics" tab on the home page and vote for Baldo (it looks like you have to register on the site; click here to do that). You might also call Lifestyle Editor Lisa Boykin Batts at 252-265-7810 or e-mail her at lisa@wilsondaily.com. If you want to do some catching up on the characters, read the Baldo entry on Wikipedia. It will get you up-to-date on all the characters -- Baldo, Gracie, Tia Carmen and dad. Of course, you'll find lots of info here too. Here's hoping Wilson will soon be joining our Baldo familia! ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by HCantu at 10:17AM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com.
Friday, January 26, 2007 Who's the inspiration? Were do u get the characters from? They are very fantastic and unlike the other comics they seem real in a way i can imagine them. Who do u compare them to? ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by Isidro at 12:45PM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com. COMMENTS ¦We like to say Baldo, Gracie y familia are complete fabrications based on our real-life experiences. They mostly reflect lots of people we've known and met in our lives -- tios, tias, primos, hermanos, hermanas. When we created the strip, we put on emphasis on making everyone "real." So when someone says "My tia is just like Tia Carmen!" or "My brother is just like Baldo!" that's the best. Post by HCantu at 12:58PM.
Thursday, January 25, 2007 Another Pito submission What's a Pito for Hispanics who strive to use proper English (sometimes awfully pronounced) and proper Spanish (even though "proper" fluctuates between regions and classes)? May I reprint your strip? Dear Baldo Comics: I am a Literacy Coach at a middle school. In order to introduce you to students, I would like to make a transparency of your comic strip of 11/06/05 which displays an architect and a demolition man. It has numerous teaching opportunities: vocabulary, careers, cause and effect, etc. May I have your permission to make an overhead transparency for classroom instruction? ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by Carol at 11:14AM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com. COMMENTS ¦Universal Press Syndicate handles most of our reprint requests. Click here for info. Usually, if it's for classroom use, there's no problem at all. Anything more complicated than that (like for a book or web site) needs special permission. The folks there are super nice, so don't hesitate to e-mail or call. Post by HCantu at 11:31AM.

Monday, January 22, 2007 Stop with the big wet ones! Thanks guys for a great comic. The lessons of life that you have been portraying in Baldo with his tias are lessons that can be applied to us all. And you make it humorous .... But jeez, do the ugly old aunts HAVE to plant wet ones on his face??? Just kidding ... it is all good! ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by Danial P. at 12:45PM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com.
Ignorance is not bliss! ¡Hola chicos! I just wanted you to know that, sin embargo F.Martinez is entitled to his opinion, yo pienso he missed el punto. He wrote: "Spanglish is used by those who are not proficient in either language. I am sorry you find a reason to promulgate the incorrect use of either language." If it weren't for all the mixing, matching y similarities de todos las lenguas we wouldn't have as much dialog as we do now amongst los gentes del mundo (y we still have a long way to go). Throughout la historia people have been changing y pushing las barreras de idioma. Mi attempts a aprender español y mi "Spanglish" is what brought dos gentes de hemisferios differentes together! If "Spanglish" can help dos gentes find amistad y amor imagine what could happen if the whole world made an attempt a aprender each others language con open corazones y mentes! There is an expression: "Ignorance is bliss", ¡pero no creo! Ignorance is what keeps people living in fear y distrust. To have a sense of wonder, curiosidad y, mas importante, a sense of humour about ones self can go a long way towards healing the rifts that keep our world y its people apart. Rather than F. Martinez being disgusta y offended, he could try to see the beauty y humour in the similarities y differences en todos las idiomas - as we all should strive towards cada dia. Aqui es un otro "Pito"- mi esposo calls me his "Chica-latte pequeña", porque me gusta "caffe e latte" (which is Italian for cafe con leche) y mi piel es muy blanca! ¡Pasa un buen dia! ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by Catharine at 11:37AM. Friday, January 19, 2007 Please take this literally Mr. Cantu: Thank you for speaking at Purdue University for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebrations. Continue your sense of humor and enthusiasm. We need plenty of it in today's society. We need "literally" tons of it! :-) ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by Emilio C. at 8:01AM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com. COMMENTS ¦Thanks for the nice words, Emilio. (Did I really rag that much on people who use the word "literally" incorrectly? I guess I did). Above is a photo from the event taken by Brent Forgues and here is a link to a story written by Manda Ramirez of the campus student paper The Exponent. It was a blast (figuratively!) visiting and talking about Baldo! Post by HCantu at 8:16AM.
Thursday, January 18, 2007 Had a great time with ASPIRA! Just wanted everyone at Aspirantes of Palm Beach County (Fla.) to know I had a great time during my visit over the Christmas holidays to talk about Baldo! It was inspiring to meet so many motivated young people. It was great meeting all you guys! Sunday, January 14, 2007 Where can I get a framed copy? Our local paper does not carry your strip. I happened across it at the Miami airport while waiting for a flight and loved the message of the comic. It perfectly describes the home I grew up in and the home that I try to create for my two kids. Would you still have the strip and would you sell it? I'd love to frame it for my home. If this is typically not done, then I'll understand and pass along an "atta boy" for a job well done. Thanks for your time. ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by Jeff at 4:33PM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com. COMMENTS ¦Jefe, the best place to buy a copy of our strips is our page at the GoComics Web site. Click here. On the right side, you'll see a box with tabs that say: mobile, books, prints, shop. Click on "prints" and you'll see info on that day's strip. As the blurb says, they're Big! (a daily comic strip is 5" x 14" - 13" x 21" framed); Printed on archival-quality, acid-free paper; Available framed - on acid-free backing and matting. Do it! Post by HCantu at 4:49PM.
Friday, January 12, 2007 El Gato Negro on the move! Wanted to drop this line to all Baldo fans that everyone's favorite Latino superhero, El Gato Nergo, will be soon rubbing elbows with the likes of the Savage Dragon (Erik Larsen), Shi (Billy Tucci), Cry for Dawn (Joe Linsner), Madman (Mike Allred) and many more. Dave Ryan, penciller and writer for Red Anvil Comics, based in New York, is coming out with a multi-mini-series comic book with appearances of nearly every independent comic book character ever created. It's called "WAR OF THE INDEPENDENTS." El Gato Negro will be one of many "indies" appearing in the crossover series. The cover/promo shot of "War of the Independents" can be seen as Dave Ryan's profile pic on his MySpace page. It will be made into poster form and available starting at the NYC Comic Con in Feb. LONG LIVE EL GATO NEGRO!!!! ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by Richard D. at 8:39AM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com.

Thursday, January 11, 2007 Please keep on rockin' Hey, long time Baldo fan here. First of all, I would like to compliment you on the Baldo comic strip. I have been following it for several years now, and I love collecting the clippings from the newspaper so that I can enjoy them later. I just think that it brings a different aspect of American culture and, in my opinion, a very humorous one. I can see a little bit of me in most of the strips, which is so fun. I love each character, but I have a special interest in Gracie, especially when she sets off to improve the world. Thank you much & keep rocking with the Baldo comic strip! --------------------------------------------------------- Post by N.P. at 6:54PM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com.

Whispers that I am la migra To y’all, I’ll appear to be otro mas bolillo. Way too often, I hear the whispers that I am la migra. That’s the way it is for six-foot-tall blonde Mexicans with non-musical apellidos. Anyway, your 12/12/06 strip made me think about the regional modismos of my early years. I grew up norteño, quite rural, and until I discovered surfing, I only knew about California as Hollywood (“la baja” was a different story!). Our “pitos” were directed toward “el déefe” and “los chilangos” and the flashy stuff they wore when visiting. Our outpost they uniformly termed “fronteralandia” and they referred to us as “cácaros” (kind of like my fellow rural tejanos were called “shitkickers”). Our derisive term for their flash was “chilangada” and for their actions, “chilangazo”. Anyway, gracias por sus atenciones y ¡ándale! ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by e.junker at 9:32AM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com.

Tuesday, January 9, 2007 What happened to Baldo's haircut? A few weeks back, there was a plot line in the daily Baldo strip where Baldo goes into the local ethnic Barber shop, "Fades 'N' Braids" and tells the Barber there he wants a "Cool Cut," as he is getting his school picture taken for the yearbook the next day. He is a little nervous, but the barber there assures Baldo he's come to the right place for a "Cool cut." Just as the Barber at Fades 'n' Braids starts trimming, Baldo imagines his picture in the school yearbook after this haircut. He imagines himself with a high-top fade, bald on the sides, low-cut on top, and a small line up the middle. It was this very plot line that got me started on reading Baldo in the first place. I am white. In 1995, I was the stereotypical white boy at all-Black Alabama State who walked into the Heritage Barbershop, got my Cool Cut, and kept going back. So I related to this plot line and Baldo's initial apprehension when he first stepped into Fades 'N' Braids. I was nervous the first time I went to the Heritage too, 'cos I was the only white guy in the joint. By the time my first cut was through, everyone there was my friend. My question is, WHAT HAPPENED TO BALDO'S COOL CUT FROM FADES N BRAIDS ?!?!? Will Baldo go in for the Fade? did he chicken out and lose his nerve at the last second?? What happened?!?! Why was this plot line just dropped and abandoned?? It's driving me CRAZY!! ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by Richard at 1:15PM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com. COMMENTS ¦Richard, that storyline ended with Baldo's photo in the yearbook. We liked the idea of Baldo dealing with the situation, but we decided to go back to his regular cut when the story was over. Sorry man! A few readers have asked for the return of the buzz, but not enough to make us change the character design. Post by HCantu at 5:15PM. ¦DUDES!!! Baldo HAS to get a fade!! Whether it becomes a plot again or not, I will keep reading and hoping. Baldo looked tight as HELL with that fade!! Post by Richard at 7:34PM.

Monday, January 8, 2007 Too bad my paper doesn't run you I wish my local paper ran Baldo! I ask them to whenever they're looking for new strips, they never listen. I read it faithfully on the Washington Post Web page. And, as a math professor, I've got several Baldo-doing-math-homework strips on my door too. The students really love the one where he's worked every problem 5 times and gotten 5 different answers. Thanks for a great strip. ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by J.Roitman at 11:36AM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com. COMMENTS ¦If Baldo does not run in your paper, try calling the comics editor and asking for it! Leave a message if no one answers. That works too. And ask your family and friends to call and e-mail, too! This doesn't guarantee that Baldo will come out in your newspaper, but it will let the editors know that lots of people in your town want to read it. And then, eventually, just to get you and all your primos off their backs, they'll run it! It's that easy! Post by HCantu at 11:44AM.
That's my family in your strip My family consists of - me, my two boys and their grandmother or my mother. And, yes, the two boys are just like your two characters. Don't worry about a mom. She left the family less than ten years ago because she was only able to deal with herself and everything else was more than she was able to deal with. Thanks for an awesome Christmas strip. ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by Matthew at 11:10AM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com. Where's the Spanish book? Put me on the list of "very interested" in a compilation of your cartoon strip in Spanish with English translations. Each week your cartoon offers a lesson consisting of vocabulary, verb tense, and an "every day" situation or context to help learn another language. Entertaining while instructional - fabulous! ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by ChipL. at 11:56AM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com.
Language usage deserves un 'F' Your wit to bring true Latin family values in your well drawn cartoon made me look for your space in the local newspaper on a daily basis. Now you are trying something new called PITOS. I always understood or assumed your background is Mexican-American but your clever filtering of real universal Latin family values attracted my curiosity on a daily basis. I am not of Mexican background, I am Cuban-American. As you know every Latin country has a designated nickname word or interpretation thereof for different things. Pitos for a Cuban born is something you make noice with (whistle), and in the colloquialism could be used instead of penis. The word used in your cartoon does not bother me, what really turns me off is that word has a connotation of the wrong use of both languages, English and Spanish. In fact we knew this miss use as Spanglish. Spanglish is used by those who are not proficient in either language. I am sorry you find a reason to promulgate the incorrect use of either language. This has nothing to do with true Latin family values universal to most of us bilingual in Spanish and English. Please do not spoil the good place you have carved among your readers. ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by F.Martinez at 11:20AM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com. COMMENTS ¦You're right. We will immediately cease the ill-adviced practice of having fun with and/or miss using words -- either English or Spanish -- in Baldo. Thanks for setting us strate! Post by HCantu at 12:56PM. What about this Pito? Baldoramus = cartoonist who completely misunderstands the topic of his own cartoon. Monday was college bowl games. They’re not “professional sports.” ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by Rob B. at 8:01AM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com. COMMENTS ¦Ha! Good one! We like it! Actually, just because the strip came out on Jan. 1 does not mean we were referring to that specific day. We could have been referring to previous Sunday. That's our story and we're sticking to it! But yeah, we probably maybe shoulda left "professional" out. Post by HCantu at 8:08AM. ¦You guys are great. Nice come back. Keep up the good work... I'll keep watching. Post by Rob B. at 11:42AM.
Thursday, January 4, 2007 Left, right, left, right, left You know the experience where you are walking toward someone and you want to pass them, and you move to the right to pass, but they move to their left, blocking you (not intentionally). Then you move to your left to go past them and they move to their right, blocking you again? That's a lot of words to describe that occurrence and there isn't a word for it. Well, I propose the word GRIFFLE. It sounds like what it is, a back and forth movement. You can use it for your Pitos. ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by Carol L. at 5:18PM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com.
Here's a Pitosito ¡Hola chicos! Still reading y enjoying the antics of Baldo y Gracie! Mi "pito" comes from my innocense of when I first met mi esposo (de Ecuador) y I was trying to learn español. I was figuring out the whole "sito" concept -- like chico/chicosito, casa/casasita, etc. Pues un dia caliente, when we were heading out somewhere, I asked my husband if he was going to wear his "pantalitos". He looked at me like I was loca! I said, "¿Sabe, los pantalones are pants y los pantalitos are shorts, right, because shorts are small pants?" We still laugh about it y we still use the word pantalitos to refer to shorts -- especially those baggy ones that the kids wear that make them look like short, fat old men with saggy diapers! ---------------------------------------------------------- Post by C.Espinosa at 10:51AM. Furserious! We mean it! Can you believe it? This year (in April), Baldo hits its 7th-year anniversary. Let's see, by our calculations, that's about 2,500 comic strips out there! We've enjoyed (mostly) doing every single one. And there's a lot planned for this year as well. The biggest news so far is the screening of our Baldo animated show at the San Diego Latino Film Festival in March. Carlos and I hope all our SoCal friends can come check it out. Of course, we'll be doing more cellphone wallpapers this year, too! So keep an eye out for that. And, more importantly, there are some significant events planned this year for Baldo and Gracie in the strip. Stick around, you won't be disappoined. And, of course, as always, we encourage all of you to take some time out soon to write an e-mail, a letter or make a phone call to your local newspaper thanking them for running Baldo. Tell the Comics Editor why you're totally crazy about the strip and look forward to it every day. We'd be eternally grateful, and would fulfill our guarantee to kiss your pinky finger if we ever meet you in person. Now, let's get this year started, shall we? --------------------------------------------------------- Post by HCantu at 11:10AM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com.
