Dallas Comic Con report No. 2
At my table at the Dallas Comic Con, I had the pleasure of sitting next to Cal Slayton, an awesome artist whose work you can see in the graphic novel Shades of Blue (cover of Volume 1 below) and lots of other comics. Check out Cal's site here.

Shades of Blue

Even cooler, Cal took the time to sketch Baldo:

Dallas Comic Con report No. 1
The first day of Dallas Comic Con is over (I'll be back there tomorrow) and it was a blast meeting fellow artists and fans of Baldo! I'll be posting photos and artwork here today and tomorrow. Check out Mark Hay and Aaron Wilson's Geek Like Me. I first met these guys at Dallas Comic Con nearly two years ago when they were handing out their self-published comics. Check em out now! Their latest issue is pretty awesome (and funny). Congrats guys! Check out their web site here to read their stuff or order their latest issue (below).

Baldo by Cantu & Castellanos
Stomping on his heart?
Go ahead, get Baldo all warm & fuzzy inside his brain over Beatriz; and then rip out his heart and stomp it over to the curb! Beatriz, shame on you! I thought you would treat a friend better than that. Or, maybe you want Baldo to know that he is going to stay in the "friend" status for a while; until you know more about him and the way that he would treat you. But be gentle to him. He doesn't know how all these mind games are played. He's a very honest, literal person. What you see is what you get, and that's a very rare quality to find in a person.

Where can I get a copy?
Do you ever sell the original drawings of your strips? If not, are full size copies available? I am looking for a full size of a strip you did about a year ago that showed Baldo talking to a customer about his 1977 AMC Pacer. It has “6/8” at the bottom of the last frame.

Anyone can order a hi-quality framed copy from ucomics.com. Here is the link.

If you prefer to order by phone, have your Visa or MasterCard ready and call: Universal Press Syndicate at 1-800-255-6734 ext. 6688.
That comic was published on 6/8/06. We wrote it from experience! My parents bought me a used Pacer in the early '80s and it broke down on the way home. Our mechanic refused to even open the hood. "I don't fix Pacers," he said glumly, like a doctor giving up on a terminal patient.
Anyways, we're sending you a digital copy of that strip from our files.

Pacer

¦I made a very good copy from your email. I bought a ’79 Pacer about the time of your strip, over the strong objections of my wife. She has the same attitude about Pacers as your mechanic. I drive it about once a week and have taken it to a few old car shows. I plan to put the enlarged copy of your strip in the windshield when I show it. I took the liberty of changing the year in your strip from “1976” to “1979.” Again, many thanks.

Dallas Comic Con
Let's hang out in Big D
Hey everyone in North Texas. I'll be at the Dallas Comic Con, June 30-July 1. Click here for details. If you make it out, stop by to talk. This year, I'm taking a cue from friends of mine (who border on being annoying fans) and taking a sketchbook so fellow artists can do some drawlings. Then maybe I'll post em here. I'll be the dude in the FREE TIA CARMEN! t-shirt.

Go buy this now!
OK, we don't normally like dropping names (our pal Jennifer Lopez tells us we do it way too much). But we'll do it this once. Our friend Stan Lee, who occassionally gives us a little advice on Baldo (mostly when we ask for it because Stan is like a Comics God and he knows we really mean that ... in a friend kinda way), has his own action figure. All we can say is 'Bout Time! Congrats Stan. Can you send us a free one? Read about it here.

Whatever happened to Baby Gus?
On the 8/22/06 edition of Baldo, there was a little baby which was named Gustavo Arroyo who was left alone by the mother who had to do errands so both Baldo and Cruz had to watch him. Are there any plans to see more of the tot along with the mother in the near future?

¦I'm not sure who thought Smiley and Baldo didn't have chemistry. Smiley knew it was there. Baldo was just too thick-headed to understand it. He saw her as a friend. She saw him as more. He hurt her and, I believe, helped make her the "mean girl" she became. Even if they can't be together, please just bring Smiley back as Smiley. Even if they can't be a couple at least let them be friends again. Is that too much to ask?

Orale, Baldo!! Nothing like being honest about your inner feelings. Screw a co-operative workplace atmosphere. That pendejo Joey sure isn't co-operating! I think Baldo should make sure nobody's looking, though. Then maybe Joey just walked into a door or something. You never know about workplace accidents.

Shout out to all my pitos!
Wow! I saw your comic for the first time a couple of weeks ago and loved it! I have an interesting word for you. My friends and I actually deemed the term "pito" for your closest friends. We came up with the word as a female version of the word "woday" we often heard in rap songs. So while you may argue that pitos are words that aren't in the dictionary, I believe the dictionary should add "pito" as a term of endearment for our dearest girl friends!

New baby named Gracie!
Hi, I am a devoted fan of Baldo ... all the characters are so likable. On Oct. 13, 2005, you had a strip published here in Calif. that was about Gracie and a friend talking about what they wanted to be when they grew up. Our granddaughter was born on that day and the kids named her Gracie. I did cut out the comic, because Gracie says she wants to grow up to be Gracie. I would dearly love to have a copy of that strip signed by the creative guys who write it. Is that a posibility?

Watch out for that purse!
Growing up on the border town of El Paso, TX, taught me many things about language, especially Spanglish. My family and I made up all sorts of words. Here are two of my favorite pitos:
driveando -- Something my grandmother and grandfather say when they refer to another person, usually a teen, driving down the street reckless.
bolsaso -- Hitting a male with a purse when a female catches him looking at another girl.
Thanks for making me laugh. Keep up the good work!

When my wife, Jean begins to sneeze, you can expect as many as 20 sneezes before being able to stop. I have labeled this behavior "sneezure." And now I have to say "bless you" only one one time for the whole sneezure. My definition for sneezure is "two or more sneezes in a series."

Give this some thinkification
Here's a word we use often, now that we're aware of it. A friend uses it all the time and no one had the heart to tell her it wasn't a real word until recently. She couldn't believe it wasn't a word and her children (now grown) got hysterical when she asked if it was a word and they told her it wasn't. She wondered why no one ever told her. The word is 'planify.' Planify means to make a plan. Our friend would say, "We need to planify where we're going tomorrow." Planify is a wonderful word and we hope you can use it.

Hi there, i sooooo enjoy your strip every day. I always read it last 'cause its my favorite. Back in college, my friends (lourdes garcia and robert ramirez) came up with a word I think would make a great "pito". "Aire-condi-soplado" is when the air conditioning in your car breaks and you have to drive around with your windows open. May your day be filled with love and laughter.

Just wandering the halls
Thanks for your strip. Its one of my favorites, I read it daily. There is much in it I can relate to, Chicano, raised by an aunt, Tacha, after we were orphaned, the kissing tias, all the pitos my brothers, aunts, uncles and cousins came up with. Your strips takes me back to South Texas 40 years ago. Thanks, kinda. I teach in an inner city school in Albuquerque, NM. We have a large Hispanic immigrant population. We sometimes get kids that prefer to wander the halls rather than make it to class. I call them hall-ejeros, after callejeros, someone who spends a lot of time on the streets. According to the aunt that raised me, I was one of those.

Remember this cooking Pito?
For every Hispanic family that was raised up on real Mexican cooking. Remember when we would ask our madre what was for dinner? Mom would reply "Carne con papas y frijoles y tortillas de harina, then to drink we're having Horchata." I would always have to translate that to my friends that were standing there with me.

What about 'doferme'? Amie our granddaughter is always asking Grandma what you gonna doferme - come pick me up and take me to the mall - buy me something! Momma says come pick me up and buy my school clothes. This is the only time that we ever hear from our granddaughter as she lives with our ex-daughter-in-law. Doferme! We enjoy your strip. Another one is "watchayahbringferme." Why is it that grandkids and daughter-in-laws think that when grandparents come to visit that Santa Claus has just arrived. You sorta get the feeling of why am I here. "watchayahbringferme."

This image offends reader
Unbelievable. The Sunday June 10 Baldo shows two guys,
blasting a car stereo, and gorgeous women come
running. This was dispicable! How about two guys blasting a car stereo and:
1) losing permanent hearing
2) distracting other motorists
3) becoming unable to hear emergency vehicles
4) not hearing the sound of a train
5) having their vehicle compounded for noise violation.
I've asked the Houston Chronicle to drop your comic.

It's interesting how certain art impacts different people in
different ways. In your case, this image and its message are so offensive to you that you want it banned. OK. Thanks for sharing your opinion, which we gladly print here.
Post by HCantu.

¦A final thought: If you had to live in your own home while outside there was the constant, perpetual sound of guys blasting their car stereos, possibly you wouldn't find the situation all that funny either. I'll just assume you live somewhere gated where audio assault isn't a problem. Lucky you.
Post by R. Marsh.

¦R. Marsh's comment that he thought your strip was "unbelievable" made me wonder if he was born ayer o was born already a grown, cranky hombre who completely bypassed those glorious teenage years when the world lay just ahead, wide open with promise y all one has do to is reach for it. That installment couldn't have been more believable! Soy una mujer, pushing 50 y I am fortunate to live near the ocean. I gotta say, when I hear the kids "cruisin' around in their GTOs" y "blasting out the (music genre) on their radios" (as the Ramones once sang) it takes me back to those glorious years when I didn't have to fret that the neighbours would turn me in to code enforcement for my grass being too long (I love to roll around in the tall grass y wildflowers on my front lawn- much to the dismay of the old fogies who are not much older than I am!). On hot summer days I still cruise along the beach road, envying the girls in bikinis, admiring the buff guys with their surfboards, while singing along with the radio (although they don't play as many Ramones songs any more!). I roll the windows down y let my hair blow back. OK. So I wear my safety belt, use my turn signals, keep mis ojos peeled for dangerous drivers y mis orejas open for sirens y trens. But I am enjoying every one of those rapidly fleeting moments as I hurl closer to the end of my days y further away from the beginning. Tal vez R. Marsh would prefer that Baldo live in a mundo plastico where everyone is "white, right & uptight"; a scary place where kids can never taste the thrill of living y loving with unbridled passion before the corporate world y responsibilities, like bills y taxes, take over. Not to mention being forced to mow the lawn just to make someone else happy! Is it irresponsible for teenagers (or anyone!) to speed down the street with the top down, blasting the stereo, while digging on the chicks y guys? Sure. But no more irresponsible than when I was growing up. I'm quite certain that even teens back in the pioneer days took their caballos y wagons out for a spin through town y the old timers threw their fists in the air y cried, "Darn hooligans!" Pero esta el mundo de Baldo y we can't loose sight of that. Baldo is every teen throughout the ages. He represents all of us with our sueños, secretos y even our regrets. He represents who we were, who we are, y who we would like to be again if we could have that one chance to do it all over again y know what we know right now. Quiza R. Marsh would like to call me sometime y I could take him out for a spin. He'd have to promise to wear his seat belt y hold on tight. I could show him a life he obviously, sadly, missed. Pobre chico. But it's never too late for postre! (I think he'd learn to even appreciate the Ramones!)
Post by Catharine Espinosa.

¦Hey, we've been Ramones fans since high school! Turn it up!
Post by HCantu.

The Ramones

¦"GABBA GABBA HEY! We accept you're one of us!" Now why can't those simple words be the anthem of all people? How many lie on their death beds regretting they weren't more hateful during their lifetime? Who meets the end wishing they'd been more crabby? Sadly, I guess there are quite a few. Paz!

Pito from New Mexico
How about: ¡Qué Smartóté!
I was telling one of our security guards (Samuel) how smart he was (Qué Smartóté) when he got an easy answer to a line in a crossword puzzle. No love for Tia Carmen
I just wanted to give you my comments on your comics. Okay, the jokes are alright. The characters are fine. I like Baldo the most, but there's one character I can't stand, and that's Tia Carmen. She REALLY gets on my nerves. I think you're trying a little too hard to make her funny ... maybe the only thing I can't stand is her hair and glasses and that just makes my opinion biased.
One other thing is the Spanish words. I have nothing against mexicans or hispanics. In fact, I think they're awesome. It's just that the words and the spanish foods just make most of us have a biased opinion on everything you say.
Like the most recent Pitos, 'bleepos,' was really irritating to me. Not only because the word wasn't normal, it also seemed to sort of make fun of spanish things in a way.
I mean, rap music cusses a lot, that's how it is, but it's also made me irritated with Carmen because she really seemed ignorant to how teenagers think when she said that.
I'm not making fun of your comics, I'm just giving you the opinions of me and many of my friends. Sorry if I sounded rude.

Josh, you are right in some respects. Tia Carmen may not completely understand young people. That's just pretty realistic. Some people don't get young people. And our Pitos in fact DO make fun of [made up] words people use in everyday life. So what you're saying really isn't rude. You're mostly right! Nothing rude about that!

¦Thanks for not being mad at what I said. One more thing. I just wanted to say, I loved your comment on Marsh R's email on June 11. Seriously, that guy has a problem. It's a joke on a piece of paper. I've seen these sort of mails in different comic books where the author comments. Especially the old 'The Far Side' comics, which people take WAY too seriously. Well, I just guess I wanted to tell you that I understand how annoying it is to put up with people like this. Thanks again.

I have a Pito and a story
How about:
roundeo - 1. An entrance/exit interchange from one highway to another intersecting highway or road.
2. The circular or semi-circular rotating shelves within a corner cabinet to provide easy access to otherwise inaccessible items in the back of the cabinet.
3. The circular rotating kitchen-utensil holder that is usually
kept on top of the counter to provide easy access for items, as needed.
4. A lazy-susan.

Also, I don't know in what way you may best adapt this for use in Baldo, but my husband and I really experienced this -- so unbelievably! ...
When our oldest was fully adorned with a green Mohawk (the sophomoric-sitting-on-the-brains years), I awoke in the middle of one night (2-3AM) upon hearing awful banging coming from the front of the house. I found our then 17-year old in the kitchen, with a crow bar
attempting to pry/bang open the seemingly stubborn oven door. However, all he had to have done was to observe that the oven had been secured for self-cleaning and to
adjust the lever/switch. Although the oven was never to self-clean again, it was usable for a number of years thereafter.
Feel free to use this family memory as a springboard for your helping so many to have a hearty belly-laugh. Thanks for helping us all to start each day with a chuckle and a smile and for welcoming our participation for initial brainstorming sessions.

Thanksfoya submission!
I enjoy reading your Pitos words in Baldo's comic strip. Here's my contribution:

heretogo - what fast food employees ask each customer to determine whether the food is to be eaten in the restaurant or taken out.

We were hosting a group of Polish students who stopped at a fast food restaurant on a trip. After getting their food they gathered in a clump outside the door, searching frantically through their English-Polish dictionaries. Finally one of them came over to us and said they just couldn't find the word they were looking for: heretogo. When we
finally figured it out there was a huge round of laughter from all of us.

gigundo - something very big. ex: That thing is GIGUNDO!
-- Scott, Salinas, CA

yammahalt – having to suddenly brake when pulling into a parking space because you discover a motorcycle parked at the front of the space.

aquaflex - the uncontrollable urge to look down at the water when driving over a bridge.
-- Tom, Richmond, Ky

chuliznokins - what Puerto Ricans say when you look too good for words / or when a baby is way to chulo they are CHULIZNOKINS!
-- Diana (aka Flaca)

snog - As in "Don't snog all the chocolate milk down!" In other words... don't drink all the chocolate milk. It's what the little sister says to her 3 older brothers when she wants something before it's all gone.
-- Julie

scramdale! -- Hurry up and go!
-- Becky, Surprise, AZ

tootish -- I coined this word years ago and people around me have made it their own too. A word meaning that a person is being difficult Example: She was so tootish to deal with today.

-- Megan

The fun thing about this is that the little sister, my daughter, is actually named Gracie! Good luck on your new comic. The art work you do is superb! I think your ideas are very creative and I like the way you have it in Spanish on Sundays (at least in our newspaper, the Salt Lake Tribune). It gives me a chance to brush up on my Spanish. I'm quite rusty and the conversational aspect is very helpful.

Yes, you've made it on here!
Here is my Pito:
ya-la -- What you say to someone when they do something really bad.
I also want to congratulate you on the great job you are doing with "Baldo." I am Mexican and to me this comic is really funny because some of the things on there I can relate to. Baldo's the best. Well thanks and I hope my Pito makes it on there.

Pito makes us sleepy
Just a note to say "THANKS" for your great comic strip - Baldo. I look forward to reading it everyday in our newspaper here in San Antonio. I'd like to share a "pito" that my husband and I tell each other almost everyday. We call it the everyday disease and it's called "COLCHA-LITIS. People tend to contract this disease on Monday mornings or after late night sports playoffs. It just seems that those "blankets" have a way of sticking to you and just won't peel off hence the name - Colcha-litis. Remember, the "i" after the "L" is long as in the word "light". Again, thanks for the great work and for that adorable little chicanita - Graciela.
