Digging the film noire
Dear Baldo Creators: I love it when you guys go from Baldo's comic-strip stuff to 1940-50's film noire -- Tia Carmen deserves a little escape and romance in her life -- as does everyone (I think her nephew needs a little break now and then, too, don't you?). Your skills in both artistry and dialogue are something I appreciate every time I read your comic strip.

¦OK, Carmen and Gregorio are kinda connecting, yes that's true. But it gets so much more complicated than that! Our story is heading in a slightly different direction. Gregorio will be around after this story ends, we're pretty sure of that. But you have to stay tuned for where this is going. Here's a sneak peak at Monday's strip.

Carmen story rocks!
Hello guys. We love what you have done with the art work and Tia Carmen meeting a man in the grocery store. Switching from your usual art to this "Judge Parker" type drawing looks great! It also makes me feel that she is smitten with this new stranger and has reverted to a younger age when she might have looked this cute? So you have drawn it from there perspective as younger single adults being shy about meeting someone new. In other words, Great Work! You have done it again. We enjoy your strip and watching Baldo grow, with a new job and responsibilities but still working towards that '64 Impala. Thank you for a fun read!

Hola HERMANOS

Wanted to thank you for including a "gentleman friend" for Tia Carmen. The age regression is terrific. Makes it more endearing. Your mention of Cheech Marin awhile back was too greyt! Don't forget George Lopez. He's the best. Just an aside, my greyhound, Chico Montoya, has one ear that flops over his forehead. We call it his "comb over" so, we always sing "OYE! COMO VA!" in celebration of his "como - va"!! Thanks for doing what you do! Viva La Raza!

More photos from film fest
Here are more snapshots from the San Diego Latino Film Festival, where we screened our Baldo animated show to critical acclaim and snide comments from jealous colleagues! (See show info below.)

San Diego Film Fest
Group shot! We hung out like a bunch of borrachos on a porch. From left, that's Hector, Richard Dominguez (El Gato Negro), Carlos, and Javier Hernandez (El Muerto).

San Diego Film Fest
Billy Martinez (left) is one of the coolest creators in California! That dude next to him is just some "artist" who walked in off the street and crashed our party at the San Diego Art Institute. See Billy's stuff at Neko Press (that's some of his work on the wall).

San Diego Film Fest
We were at the theater when "El Muerto" creator Javier Hernandez had his movie poster delivered. It was the first time he'd seen it! A historical moment! We had that same look on our face when our first kid was born. "Mira ... that's mine!" Support El Muerto! Buy the comic! Go see the movie!

That's all for now. We may have a few more shots left, including the elusive-now-legendary group shot with Dayanara Torres! We'll post a copy here! As soon as we get a copy from the person who promised to e-mail it to us (hint hint).

Jay Kennedy by the New York Observer
Some sad news ...
We're sorry to hear that Jay Kennedy, editor in chief of King Features Syndicate, has passed away. Read about it in the New York Observer and in Editor & Publisher. Jay was a huge player in the comics business. He launched some of the best comics around -- including Zits and Mutts. Anyone who ever submitted a comic proposal to King Features (like we did before signing up with Universal Press Syndicate) knows that Jay always took the time to write a note with suggestions on how to make your comic better. We'll always appreciate his advice for Baldo. His family has our sympathies.

Entering no humor zone
Hey! Use your own jokes. Not some jokes from Bill Watterson! I mean, I know Calvin and Hobbes was a great comic and all, but nowone wants to see the same joke, first with a cute kid and an even cuter tiger, and then with some stupid teenager.

¦I'm really not that type of person to email random people about trite details, but here I am. In scanning the usually dissapointing comics of the weekend paper, I saw the Baldo comic. I was angered upon reading it & this is why: Calvin & Hobbes is without doubt the best comic that has ever existed in the time of man & it's seriously irreverant to copy their line. Scientific progress goes boink......& that's it. Don't copy other people's lines. It's not cool; it's not funny. Seriously please, next time you get the urge to pay a little tribute to a comic that is, with all due respect, better than yours, just don't. It just doesn't work out. & it's annoying. & here I become just another person spouting their complaints.............. Respectfully.

Scientific Progress Goes Boink by by Bill Watterson

¦You guys are right. We have no business ever, ever paying tribute to Calvin & Hobbes. How dare we. The nerve! Rest assured, we will never again acknowledge the greatness and influence of Bill Watterson. Maybe.
Post by HCantu.

¦Oye, take my Scientific Progress. Please! Sabe, I just flew in from Miami & man does my Scientific Progress hurt!! Have you heard the joke about the penguin, the nun & the Scientific Progress who all walked into a bar? You'd think after seeing the penguin & the nun whack their heads, the Scientific Progress would have thought to duck!! How many comic artists does it take to screw in a light bulb? Answer: As many as it takes to make us laugh as much as possible, especially at ourselves.

On my way to Waco, Texas
I'm getting ready to leave the studio to head on out to Waco, Texas, to visit the fine folks at Baylor University. I will be speaking at the Hispanic Heritage Banquet at 7 p.m. today on the fifth floor of the Cashion Academic Center. The event is held by the Hispanic Student Association. Read more about it here. I'll try to take pictures to post here. Hope to see all you Waco Baldo fans there!

¦Hector, thank you for inspiring us and making us laugh at the Hispanic Student Association’s Hispanic Heritage Banquet! It was a joy and an honor to sit at your table and to have the opportunity to visit with you. Our 13-year-old son stayed up until 11 pm (sorry teachers) reading “The Lower You Ride, the Cooler You Are” and every few seconds we would hear him laugh! He also asked me to buy him a reading light so it will be easier for him to read his new book in his bed at night. THANK YOU BALDO!

Who does the 'Baldo' voices?
We were asked several times at the San Diego Latino Film Festival (including by Dayanara Torres, see below) about the voices behind our Baldo show. Here's the info! They all did great job and we're proud to know them!

Edward Padilla Baldo Bermudez
EDWARD PADILLA (Baldo) has done a lot of work all over Hollywood. He appeared in Mr. & Mrs. Smith as a military officer and next shows up in Spider-Man 3.

Jacqueline Pinol Gracie Bermudez
JACQUELINE PINOL (Gracie) currently stars in Lincoln Heights and previously worked on Ressurrection Blvd.

Lombardo Boyar Cruz
LOMBARDO BOYAR (Cruz) is always playing cards when Bernie joins his friends on The Bernie Mac Show (we think he appears on tomorrow's Bernie Mac show). He also does the voice of Raul in Happy Feet.

All these fine actors did a great job on Baldo. We hope you'll be seeing (and hearing) more of them in the near future.

More pics from San Diego
We know you wanna see em. Here are more photos from our trip last week to the San Diego Latino Film Festival!

Dayanara Torres
The beautiful Dayanara Torres (former Miss Universe and formerly married to Marc Anthony) was at the fest to talk about her work. She's currently starring in the TV show "Watch Over Me." The fans loved her! We had a chance to meet her in her dressing room. She's a super nice person. We'll show that picture of her with us later.

Marta Machada and Otto Desenhos
This is Marta Machado and Otto Desenhos, makers of the R-rated animated movie "Wood & Stock." It's a wild movie and def not for kids (we didn't know you could do that with animation!). They're from Brazil. Not that that explains anything.

We'll post more photos later.

¦Your strip depicting that Mini Cooper owners are gay (the meaning was clear) has just lost you a reader. Don't be surprised if you get a LOT of email over this stupidity, especially after the fiasco that Ann Coulter created. For the record, I'm 6'7", 290 lbs, straight, and own a Mini Cooper. If you want to make fun of people over compensating, make fun of SUV's and trucks.
Post by Jim.

¦Sirs, The strip you ran on March 2 is extremely offensive. The level of stereotyping in that "comic" strip is incredible. Your organizations showed extremely poor judgment in printing that strip! I'm a MINI Cooper owner. I belong to several MINI Cooper clubs and know hundreds of other owners. They members are representative of society in every way you can think. Including sexual preference. I'm no longer going to read your strip and will advise others to avoid it as well. Good Day.

¦I see no humor in the March 2nd strip.
Post by James.

Baldo by Cantu & Castellanos Baldo by Cantu & Castellanos

¦Chispas! It looks like we said a lot without saying anything! Here's the deal: It appears some readers believe Kevin in his whisper to Baldo said something about sexuality -- and they have a problem with that. OK. We won't argue with that. We left it open for interpretation. Actually, our original dialog said something like Mini owners are "totally hot studs!" Another option was "babylicious!" In the end, we decided to let readers decide how to fill in the blank. So ... thanks, guys, for telling us how you filled in the blank. We're interested also in how other readers completed that sentence, too. So let us know! Tell us how you finished Kevin's sentence at:
baldomail@baldocomics.com.
Post by HCantu.

¦Your PC backspin is interesting. Most of the Mini forums are screaming about it. The Gay employees we have were also offended when shown the strip. Yes, you struck some nerves, and the common consensus is you struck the nerves you targeted. Play innocent somewhere else, and don't insult the intelligence of those who use to read your bigoted strip.
Post by Jim.

¦OK, so Kevin said "gay." So what? People who drive Mercedes are rich. Some aren't. Middle-aged men in convertbles are in a mid life crisis. Some aren't. Moms in mini vans have kids who play soccer. Some don't. Guys in lowriders are macho Latinos. Some aren't. So what? None of that is bigoted. Really when you think about it, your strip was just stupid.
Post by Mike.

Baldo by Cantu & Castellanos

¦I just wanted to point out that a few days before this strip, you ran one (attached) that showed where Baldo's boss drives a MINI. Are you insenuating something?
Post by Frances.

¦That's the end of Kevin's sentence! ... IS TOTALLY ... THE OWNER OF AN AUTO PARTS SHOP!
Post by HCantu.

¦I was gona say TOTALLY DOABLE!
Post by Amy T.

¦The line about (and I'm paraphrasing), "even the ones that are blue?", clearly showed your intent of stereotyping. Enough said. Your comic strip perpetuates an incorrect stereotype and is therefore strongly out of line. It's the same kind of thing as saying Hispanics are lazy. I'm sure you hear that a lot and it rubs you in
much the same way your strip rubbed me and many of my friends. Have a nice day.
Post by Chris M.

¦All this reaction is awesome! We've got to keep not saying anything in the strip! "See that lowrider? He's totally [whisper whisper whisper]." "What about the dude in the old-school Camaro? He's just a [whisper, whisper, whisper]." Who knew?!?!
Post by HCantu.

¦Wow I'm surprised to see you printed some of the comments on this strip. I know how straight people don't like to look gay, so bravo on that! I'm, gay and have always wanted a Mini, so hmmm. Yes I was offended when I read this comic, but so what. We have to put up with crap like this almost everyday.

Gracie ready to shine?
To Hector y/or Carlos: I’m curious about your current ideas involving your characters in you strip. Baldo by Cantu & Castellanos Mini Cooper
Small cars can be pretty smart
After reading friday's strip, i had to wonder what
Baldo's friend 'Kevin the Car Reader' wouldve had to say about a man in his early 40s driving a recent model VW
Bug... in Houston, Texas! after you pick yourselves up off the floor and catch your breath, let me tell you something - you might want to prepare for an attitude adjustment...
My brother has to drive his personal vehicle on the
job, and racks up quite a bit of mileage doing so;
after a couple of domestic lemons, he did some
research and decided to go Yurpeon, buying a dark
grey 04 yr VW Beetle - diesel engine.
Even though the Bug is considered a secretary car (a
bud vase?!), the diesel more than makes up for it.
He frequently gets comments when he fills up - most
often its "You do realize thats the diesel pumps," and
he has to explain the engine, and that its his, not
his wifes, car.
But all chiding stops when he answers the inevitable
question of mileage -- jaws almost always drop to the
ground when they hear 42-45 mpg (usually followed by
an obligatory no way).
NOW what would Kevin think?
Thanks much for the strip, and keep the laughs coming.

¦Sure enough ... this time it was a red blue mini cooper in Reading, PA! I have the feeling that it is the same colorist that contracts out to the various newspapers to color the weekday comics. Are you guys color blind?
My newspaper has the comics in color and in your strip today, you mention a "lime-green" Taurus but the car is colored red. Are you guys idiots or just color-blind?
---------------------------------------------------------
Post by Sam at 11:07AM. Comments to baldomail@baldocomics.com.

COMMENTS
¦Chispas! We hate when that happens! Here's the deal. We do NOT color our MON through SAT comics. We send those out in black and white. But some newspapers hire people to color their MON-SAT comics. Which we think is cool. Color comics are awesome and we support em! But sometimes, these nice colorists make a mistake. Like they did today. If it's really bugging you, call your newspaper, ask for the comics editor, and let them know that you spotted a flub up. They like to know people are reading. So they'll appreciate your call. Honest!
By the way, we DO color our own Sunday comics. We take all the blame -- and credit! -- for the color in those strips.

¦Above is a copy of the red lime green Taurus published by a newspaper that shall remain nameless because we like that they print Baldo.
Post by HCantu.

¦I wonder if the unnamed newspaper that printed the red lime green car is in Reading, PA, because my local (Reading, PA) paper also printed it red. This is very funny; however, I love having colored comics seven
days a week.
Post by Lucille.

¦No, it wasn't Reading, but thanks for letting us know. Now we know of at least TWO papers that did this. <sigh>.
