I got a Pito for you
I think you call them "PITOS," words that should be in the dictionary but are not. I would suggest one, if I may be so bold, "CARTNER," meaning the person with whom one rides in a golf cart.

Dancing cadets really cool
I really liked Sunday's strip with Baldo and the dancing cadets. We have dancing cadets here in Texas when we go to quinceaneras so it was cool to see that in the paper. It's cool that you guys know that about Latino parties!

What are you guys eating?
Carnales - Osito again. Juggling midget salsa wrestlers?? Did you guys pick any mushrooms on your own lately?? Stick with the mushrooms from the store. The hombrecitos can give you a nasty hangover.

Baldo is a good brother
Hermanos: Saturday's strip was great! At least Baldo was honest; and not leave Graciela hanging with any feelings of inadequacy. That was a good thing for a big brother to do. There's many things in your strips that people miss, and they're so real about family life. As you know from my other e-mails, you have a great amount of respect from me for the way you put the show together. My respect and congratulations.

For Carl Kravetz

Who's da master Jedi?
Friend-of-Baldo Carl Kravetz is stepping down as chairman of the Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies and his colleagues can think of no better parting gift than to have him “Baldo-nized.” They remind us that Carl’s passion has been the new definition of Latino Identity that has to do with things like time & space perception, spirituality, gender perception and interpersonal orientation and he loves the way these qualities are captured in our work. Who knew?! So as a parting gift, they asked us to create an original piece of artwork. Carlos' work is above. We send it with un abrazo grande. Congrats Carl! We wish you all the best!

Here's how it's done, yo!
Check it out. Lots of readers ask, so I thought you might be interested in seeing this. It’s a video of me doing a Baldo sketch. Check back later and I'll post Part 2, which shows me inking it in. Part 3 will show me coloring it.

A Pito Christmas
Hi guys, My mom was born in Mexico and the rest of us in Arizona. Pitos have been a part of our entire lives and we have always enjoyed them. They have nothing to do with status and national pride. They are just fun ways of playing with words. The following would be a "Pito" story. I have hung onto it my entire life. It's a pito version of "The Night Before Christmas."

"Tis the night before Christmas
and all through the casa,
Not a creature is stirring, Caramba! Que pasa?
The stockings are hanging, con much cuidado,
In hopes that San Nicolas will feel obligado
to leave a few cosas, aqui and alli,
for chico y chica (y something for me).
Los ninos are snuggled all safe in their camas,
(some in vestidos and some in pajamas).
Their little cabezas all full of good things
they're all esperando que Santa will bring.
Santa esta at the corner saloon, muy borracho since mid-afternoon.
Mama is sitting beside la ventana,
shining her rolling pin,
para manana, when Santa returns to his home zigzagueando,
lit up like the Star Spangled Banner, cantando,
and Mama will send him to bed with a right...
MERRY CHRISTMAS A TODOS
Y A TODOS, GOOD NIGHT!"

I apologize for not being able to place the appropriate enyes y marcas where needed. Also, I loved your Sunday strip. It's excellent! I have been saying for years that appearance makes a difference. Parents should follow Baldo's father's lead and pay attention to what their children are wearing. Keep up the great work. Baldo is one of my favorites!

Baldo by Cantu & Castellanos

You had me there for a second
I enjoyed Sunday's strip. At first I didn't understand what was going on in the first five panels with Baldo's dad. I couldn't believe that Baldo would wear that outfit; it didn't fit the character you have created. Then in just the one last panel, you explained it all completely! It's what is perceived by the people that would see him wearing a headband and not the garment itself. Great story line and art work - as usual you two Rock! Love the strip, keep up the good work. Take care, stay healthy & happy! Your loyal reader in Whittier, CA.

¦ESPECIALLY a blue headband? Come on. You guys know you have a lot of readers of shall we say "an impressionable age." Whether you like it or not, you have a responsibility to those little minds. They are all somebody's ninos y ninas. And as innocent as the intent might be, the little ones see the big ones and want to imitate. And we ALL know how bad the gang trip can be. Okay, the spanking's over. I LOVED Saturday's strip about the broken thermostat. Who cares, as long as they think they're getting their way. Man, some customers will drive you CRAZY! But remember one thing about retail - Every customer will make you happy ... some when they come in, and others when they LEAVE!! Su Amigo ...

Carmen still teaching a few things
Hi there, I work for the NYPD Organized Theft Squad that specializes in unique scams and crimes. The Latin Lotto Scam happens to be one of them. We have successfully arrested numerous groups over the span of 10 years. I recently came across an article on your Lotto Scam strips and I think it's a great way to spread the word to the Spanish community. I have tried to find the comic strip that shows the cartoon explaining the scam. Do you have it in English and Spanish? I wanted to know how we can obtain a copy of it for our office.

¦Det. Z, you can find Tia Carmen's Lotto Scam series down the right side here under FAN FAVORITE EPISODES below. You can print strips out from there. We know for a fact that our comics helped stop at least one con. In Calif., a story appeared in a newspaper on how an elderly lady was approached about lotto tickets and she remembered our comic and walked away without being scammed. Cool.

Popeye
Ya estuvo, Popeye!
Hi People, I'm not sure if a Pito is a word or an idiom or either ... When I was young, I remember a word that was used sort of like - "Excuuuse me!" - like if you're bugged, but you probably can't use it: "Escusadome!!!". Then there is my favorite which means - like Popeye's saying - "That's all I can stands because I can't stands no more!": "Ya estuvo!!!" I love that one.

Appreciating your cartoons
I live in Waukesha, WI., about 25 miles from Milwaukee where my son lives. The reason I'm emailing you is to compliment you on your comic strip. It is awesome!!! From time to time Danny e-mails me a strip or two and one of his friends, who is black (not politically correct here, but he wouldn't care me saying he's black) also sends me Pito strips and I just loved them. I didn't realize you have your own website until today when I read my son's contribution to your cause. I clicked on your site and let me tell you, I laughed so hard my tummy hurt. It brought back a lot of memories of words that only families of similar background understand. Mind you, I am a 66 year old grandmother who didn't speak any English when I started school back in the late 40's in Arkansas and we were the only Mexican family in that little town. Being in an all white educational school system and not having resources, we were forced to speak English, which is not a bad thing so a lot of times we came up with a lot of spanglish words (I think that's what some people call them.) Anyway, some of the words took me back to my childhood and it was so great to feel that again. Congratulation on a job well done. I don't know how long you've been in business but I appreciate your cartoons a lot. Danny is our family clown and when our family gets together, it's like SNL. They all get going, they sound like a gallinero. I have family all over this country and I'm going to make sure they know about you if they don't already. Thank you very much for adding home grown humor to my life y que Dios los Bendiga a los dos.

This isn't a pito ... it's for reals!
Actually mine is a real Spanish word. When I was very young, the newspaper would publish titles of movies
being shown on TV and the Spanish language movie titles would always be followed by the word "pelicula." To me, it closely resembled the word "Dracula." Until I took Spanish classes in junior high and learned that
word actually meant "film," I always thought the movies listed were Spanish vampire films. Now whenever my friends and I watch a vampire movie, we refer to it as a "pelicula," which, of course, it actually is.
Free Tia Carmen!!!

Are these pitos?
Hello you two: My Mom gets migraine headaches. She calls them microwave headaches. "Aye, I have a microwave headache!" Once her microwave broke so I told her at least she wouldn't have anymore microwave headaches. She also calls her hot flashes "heater flashes." I just hope I don't get either.

Where's that cute co-worker?
I've been following Baldo for quite some time now. It's one of my favorites. But I need to know…..what happened to the cute gal that was working at the auto parts store that Baldo was talking to? I don't think I missed any continuations of the cartoon but anything's possible in my time-crazy world. Thanks for a great cartoon.

Liking it way up here
Hi Guys: I'm a grandmother living "way-up" North in Wisconsin. I enjoy your comic strip very much and am glad Baldo is on my newspaper. I can sooo identify with some of the issues you very slyly present on your strip. I like Tia Carmen in particular. As far as your "deportation" strip, I am happy to say that although we are very close to Chicago (a very big city), we are not having the problems with immigration that other states are having (thank God!). There haven't been any redadas or sweeps ........ yet. I hope we never do. My heart goes out to all who have suffered through them. Keep up the great work you are doing with your strip.
